I think the best surefire solution for Imprudence(and all other TPV teams)
would be to do as you guys are planning to do, but cooperate on creating or
enhancing open source jpeg libraries that can rival or outperform Kakadu's
proprietary library. However if I were to write such a library, I'd be
slightly tempted to copyleft the library with an exception forbidding any
usage for six months if you are an employee of or are contracted by Linden
Lab.
